Inflammation and Pain

We all know inflammation as the localised pain, redness, heat and swelling we get with injury; sprains and strains, cuts and grazes; insect bites and stings, and so forth. However this same process that produces these familiar symptoms also drives most diseases. Almost all pain is the result of inflammation – arthritis, and other joint, back and muscle problems; digestive disorders like irritable bowel disease or ulcerative colitis; and many types of headache.

If it hurts – you can be sure that inflammation is involved.

Inflammation – The Silent Killer

The problem is that you can have inflammation in your body without the familiar indicators of inflammation. This is why inflammation has been called the “silent killer”. A typical example of this type of inflammation is the underlying process behind heart disease and clogged arteries. It is important to note that 50% of all cardiovascular disease patients actually don’t have the traditionally recognised risk factors (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc). Very often the first sign of this sort of inflammation is an unexpected heart attack! Such “silent” inflammation is also a fundamental contributor to conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Controlling Inflammation

Inflammation is the normal response our immune system generates to all sorts of challenges, such as injury, infection and toxicity. However once inflammation becomes chronic, for instance because the body is depleted of nutrients and stressed, proper healing cannot occur. At this stage inflammation produces chemicals (cytokines), which lead not only to pain, but also to tissue damage and disease.

The importance of controlling inflammation in disease is obvious by the enormous number of pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory drugs that we use – from aspirin and paracetamol for mild conditions; to the more potent ”non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs”; to the most powerful “steroidal” anti-inflammatory agents.

Pharmaceutical Anti-Inflammatories Carry Risks

While they can be immensely effective in alleviating pain and inflammation, many if not most, of these drugs can produce undesirable side effects. As little as 10mg of aspirin may cause gastrointestinal damage and bleeding. Recently some anti-inflammatory drugs were recalled from the market after it became evident that they increased the risk of heart attack. I am not arguing against the life-saving properties of steroidal anti-inflammatories, as in asthma. However they can inhibit immune responses and affect our capacity to cope with stress by suppressing our adrenal gland function long term.

Safe, Effective Natural Anti-Inflammatory Options

Fortunately, natural medicine can provide some excellent anti-inflammatory options. One product in particular, Kaprex, a combination of extracts from Hops, Rosemary and Olive leaf, which has remarkable anti-inflammatory activity, and established safety for both the digestive and cardiovascular systems. This combination has proven extremely effective in helping to control pain associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatism and period pain, and in more acute cases of painful muscles and joints from over exercise and tension. Modern formulations such as this can be very rapid in their action.

Clinicians at the Functional Medicine Research Center have confirmed the powerful anti-inflammatory effectiveness of Kaprex. Studies at the Center have shown that Kaprex is as effective as many pharmaceutical products, without the reported potentially dangerous side effects of long-term use of these drugs. Studies have shown that the “silent killer” type inflammation that underlies many chronic diseases can also be reduced.

Extracts of Turmeric have been used traditionally for anti-inflammatory relief, however the active anti-inflammatory ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is poorly absorbed. Nalgesic a product containing, Cumerone 1, a patented curcumin complex with superior bio availability.

It is important to appreciate that, as people and different conditions are so complex, no single product can be expected to remedy every situation. This is as true for pharmaceutical medicine as it is of natural medicine. Fortunately, natural medicine provides many options that are safe and free of the long-term side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.

Various Remedies For Varied Problems

Other effective anti-inflammatory and pain remedies, depending on your individual condition, include:

  •    A combination of the traditional herbs Turmeric, Ginger, and Boswellia. In addition to a broad range of anti-inflammatory actions, these herbs have wonderful effects in supporting liver function and blood flow, which may be beneficial, for instance in toxic conditions and cardiovascular diseases.

  •    Quercetin, a flavonoid that reduces the activity of many inflammatory enzymes, with particular application to allergic reactions.

  •    Omega-3 essential fatty acids, which provide excellent long-term anti-inflammatory support. Fish oil contains EPA, a type of omega-3 fat, which has been shown to reduce the production of the bodies own inflammatory chemicals. An excellent product is Arctic Cod Liver Oil

  •    Liquid Bovine cartilage Extract – this is particularly useful with chronic degenerative conditions such as arthritis, as well as acute sprains, strains and sports injuries.

  •    A complex herbal, mineral vitamin and homoeopathic combination based on the pain relieving properties of the herb Corydalis has been formulated to assist in the management of pain such as arthritis, tension headaches and lower back pain.
