The Elimination Diet

One of the biggest influences on the gut are the foods that we eat. Often a diet of highly refined foods which are deplete of nutrients, weaken our body leading to a build-up of toxins, contribute to foods cravings which results in eating more of the wrong foods, and result in a wide range of symptoms and conditions that leads to poor health.

Below are some of the symptoms or conditions that can benefit greatly from an Elimination Diet and Gut Repair Program.

  •    Constipation

  •    Gastric reflux

  •    Bloating

  •    Food allergies or sensitivities

  •    Leaky gut

  •    Poor diet and difficulty in losing weight

  •    Diarrhoea

  •    Abdominal pain

  •    Nausea and vomiting

  •    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  •    Candida / yeast overgrowth

  •    Fibromyalgia Syndrome

  •    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  •    Long-term antibiotic / medication use

  •    Autoimmunity

  •    Irritability

  •    Depression

  •    Mood disorders

  •    Poor memory and concentration

An elimination diet is one of the best ways to identify food allergies and sensitivities. This involves removing foods that people commonly react to, and only eating a list of low reactive foods for at least a two week period. After this time other foods are reintroduced one by one, and their effects are noted to determine whether there is a sensitivity or allergy to that food.

In children, following An Elimination Diet for a short period, is one of the most successful treatments for behavioural issues. Notwithstanding the evidence from numerous studies, many medical experts still deny that diet can provoke adverse behaviours and conditions, and that modifying the diet can significantly benefit children. Artificial colours, flavours and certain natural chemicals (salicylates in apricots, berries, tomatoes, and other foods) can trigger inappropriate behaviour and conditions not usually associated with food intolerances (asthma, eczema, bed-wetting, constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, etc.) in children. The Fed Up With Food Allergies website is highly recommended as a starting point to fully explain the benefits of the Failsafe Diet.

In my practice, I highly recommend the elimination diet devised by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Allergy Clinic in Sydney, to be followed for a two week period. Most parents are amazed at the results that just diet alone can achieve. The Royal Alfred Hospital Elimination Diet not only removes all artificial colours, flavours and preservatives, but also removes natural chemicals, such as salicylates, amines and glutamates. Children often improve dramatically when placed on an elimination diet.

If there are pain issues, consideration should be given to the possibility that your body may have difficulty processing foods high in oxalate. Oxalate foods may aggravate conditions such as autism, fibromyalgia and vulvodynia.

You have to eat, so why not just change the foods that you eat for just two weeks and see what a difference it can make to your health and wellbeing.
