Biochemical Abnormalities

"Autism is a biochemical train wreck". Professor Boyd Haley

There have been many biochemical abnormalities have been described in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children in the scientific literature. Altered biochemistry has been reported in multiple organ systems:

  •    neurotransmitter levels

  •    gastrointestinal tract function

  •    gastrointestinal tract permeability

  •    appetite control

  •    immune system function

  •    reaction to drugs

Consequently in ASD there are multiple chemical imbalances, including:

  •    extreme oxidative stress

  •    metallothionein deficiency

  •    undermethylation (more than 50% of ASD children)

  •    overmethylation (approx 10 - 15% of ASD children)

  •    maldigestion and/or malabsorption

  •    elevated copper / zinc ratio

  •    vitamin B12 deficiency

  •    mitochondrial dysfunction

  •    dysfunctional phase 1 and phase 2 liver detoxification

  •    phenol sulphur-transferase (PST) deficiency

  •    kryptopyrrole disorder

ASD children have lower serum sulphate levels compared to normal controls. Some neurotransmitters in the brain are inactivated by sulphation, so sulphate plays a major role in maintaining the balance required for proper nervous system function. If there is insufficient sulphate present to remove neurotransmitters this leads to residual neurotransmitters that cause problems. As sulphate is lower in ASD children the brain may not be getting enough sulphate to get rid of those neurotransmitters that are no longer required.

Higher urine arabinose levels have been found in ASD children than in normal children. Arabinose is a by-product of glucose metabolism and yeast (Candida) overgrowth. High levels of arabinose can deplete vitamin B6, biotin and lipoic acid and decrease the solubility of neurofibrillary tangles associated with ASD. Supplementation with glutathione, vitamin C and B6 has been reported to inhibit decrease arabinose levels in the body.

Many of these chemical imbalances can be detected using a non-invasive urine test, the Organic Acid Test. Organic acid testing reveals nutritional and metabolic imbalances that can be specifically targeted and corrected.

For a review of organic acid imbalances in autism, see Autistic Therapies Focused By Laboratory Data.
