Dietary Intervention For ASD Children As a practitioner, trying to convince parents to take this issue seriously is the hardest part of the consultation. One of the leading ASD specialists in America, Dr Jacquelyn McCandless (read her Biomedical intervention approach), refuses to see any parents for a consultation unless they have been on a strict gluten and casein free diet for at least 6 months! Why? Because the effectiveness of all other interventions (including supplements) are more obvious when the child's symptoms have improved as they are not masked by the adverse behaviour seen when the child is eating gluten, casein, artificial colours, flavours, salicylates, phenols, etc. I keep telling my parents "you have to eat, then why not change the way you eat for at least a 3 months, preferably 6 months". However a warning to new parents, ASD children often crave specific foods, which often gives you a clue that these are the very foods that are causing a problem. Removal of these foods may cause an initial deterioration in behaviour or symptoms due to withdrawal symptoms. Cleaning up the diet should be planned and done in a structured way. To remove gluten and casein especially, there is an excellent 10 week plan that you can read about in the link below "ASD Dietary Intervention Recommendations". For those parents that would like more convincing evidence for changing their child's diet, please refer to the supporting research studies on dietary intervention for children on the autism spectrum.

GFCF
Diet and GFCF Cooking Video Demonstrations on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IVCXdjm7gU - Highly recommended viewing for parents that are thinking about going GFCF. Phil Commander gives a basic explanation as to why a GFCF diet should be trialled. http://www.youtube.com/user/KimmyKrocker- Kimmy Krocker, the mother of an autistic son, has been posting some Youtube videos with tips on starting the GFCF diet, product recommendations, snack ideas, a few favorite recipes. Although American products, highly recommended to motivate parents considering implementing the GFCF diet, but think that it is going to be too hard.
Supporting Research That Dietary Modification Can Benefit The Majority Of Children Increasingly parents report an improvement of behaviour and symptoms with dietary intervention. These anecdotal reports are ignored by mainstream doctors and pediatricians citing that there are no clinical studies that support the benefit of dietary intervention. If these professionals bothered to read the full studies, instead of just the abstracts, then I am sure they would have a different opinion. For a comprehensive review of dietary studies, parent surveys and why anecdotal reports should not be dismissed, I would encourage all parents to read the following supporting evidence and make up their own mind (click here).
Problems With Specific Food Intolerances Be aware that children may have problems with digesting lactose (in milk), which is usually picked up early in life. What is not so obvious is when a child does not tolerate fructose (in fruits and added to many processed foods). A comprehensive food diary can often help with identifying issues with diet. Elimination of suspect foods and their reintroduction can often be the best way to confirm that there is an issue with certain foods.

Specific Diets The following diets have been used by parents and found to be helpful for their children. One of the most successful is the Single Carbohydrate diet (SCD). These are not diets that should be attempted by inexperienced parents. Parents should try a GF CF diet first and consider the possible effects that salicylates may have on their children's behaviour. It is also recommended that parents work with an experienced practitioner to ensure that your child is receiving adequate dietary nutrients.
