Nutrient Deficiencies

Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a need for increased amounts of vitamins, minerals, and some amino acids.

Most ASD children have been shown to have the following abnormalities:

  •    Low vitamin B6

  •    Low zinc - Zinc is of especial concern, as it is usually low in autism. Low zinc has been correlated with mood disturbance (irritability, tearfulness, being sullen, aversion body contact, photophobia and gaze aversion.

  •    Low magnesium - magnesium is required in over 200 different metabolic reactions in the body

  •    Low levels of Vitamin A

  •    Low in B group vitamins including B1, B3, B5 and biotin as assessed by organic acid testing (OAT)

  •    Low levels of omega-3 fatty acids as assessed by red blood cells membrane levels and elevated arachadonic acid which is inflammatory

  •    Low selenium - approximately 50% of children

  •    Low folate and vitamin B12

In addition, glutathione plays many important roles in the body, including binding to and eliminating toxic metals. Plasma glutathione levels are typically 50% lower in children with ASD. Copper is the one mineral that ASD children often have in excess and additional supplements will only worsen the excess. When copper levels are too high, levels of vitamin C and zinc drop.

There are other reasons why these children need additional nutrients. First, ASD children rarely eat a balanced diet. They often have an extremely limited number of foods they will accept and these rarely encompass all of the major food groups. Secondly, they may have decreased absorption of needed vitamins and minerals due to poor digestion and gastrointestinal inflammation. In one study a multivitamin supplemented group of ASD children reported statistically significant improvements in sleep and gastrointestinal problems compared to the placebo group.
