The Puzzle of Autism
The modern concept of autism is described in a broader category called Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD. Statistics on the disorder suggest that it has become epidemic. From surveys done before the 1990’s overseas, the incidence was estimated at approximately 5 in 10,000 with a ratio of boys to girls being 4:1. The prevalence of the disorder has been steadily increasing with some states in the US reporting an incidence of 1 per 500 in the community. A recent study in Australia has found the incidence to be between 4.3 and 5.5 per 10,000 in two Australian states.
Researchers have noted that children diagnosed with ASD have a higher prevalence of a number of conditions. The more common ones include: increased incidence of infections, gastrointestinal abnormalities, nutrient abnormalities, high levels of heavy metals, detoxification problems, sleep problems, food allergies and intolerances.
