Vitamin B12

Intramuscular injections of vitamin B12 have been the mainstay of B12 deficiency treatment of B12 deficiency treatment for several decades. The latest research suggests that oral or sublingual supplementation remains a viable option. In fact the evidence would now seem conclusive, although there has been some hesitancy for the acceptance for this fact by the medical mainstream. recent clinical studies have shown that 1000mcg of Cyanocobalamin, taken orally, was effective in 100% of the patients tested, and no patients had to resume vitamin B12 injections.

A recent Cochrane Review made similar findings, suggesting doses of 2000mcg doses daily for one month, followed by 1000mcg doses weekly and then monthly. It is now well established that some vitamin B12 will be passively absorbed (diffused) even when there is an absence of intrinsic factor, in which case 1.2% of an oral dose of vitamin B12 will pass across the small bowel.

Injectable doses are much lower than oral doses, falling within the range of 1000mcg per month for an adult. Despite concerns expressed some researchers, the highest doses of 1000-2000mcg are important to ensure that enough of the vitamin is passively absorbed.

To improve vitamin B12 metabolism and absorption, it may be necessary to give supplemental pancreatic enzymes and betaine hydrochloride. In fact this can be taken further and a gut repair program initiated , particularly if there is damage to the integrity of the mucosal barrier to enhance absorption.
